Reading is for everybody, and it can have benefits for everyone as well. Check out some of the many benefits below!
- “Reading is for the brain what exercise is for the body”
The brain is like any other muscle and it needs to be exercised regularly in order to stay strong. Reading, along with chess, puzzles and cryptic crosswords, is known to be particularly effective in keeping the brain active. Studies have shown that regular reading can improve memory, and can slow or even prevent the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Reading strengthens creativity
Avid readers are often more innovative in their thinking and in areas of problem-solving. Reading fuels the imagination and stimulates our curiosity, and provides an insight into the thinking of some of the world’s most creative minds.
- Reading increases knowledge
Books are written by people who’ve all experienced different areas of the world and have different things to say about it. Reading opens our minds to different cultures, different perspectives, and different takes on the world. The more you read, the more information your mind will absorb, and the more knowledgeable you will become. The mind is always hungry for new information, and it’s important to satiate it – how boring would life be without learning new things? Reading is also particularly important in developing vocabulary and writing skills, which is why it is crucial to read to children and encourage reading in children from an early age.
- Reading alleviates stress
There is nothing better than settling in to bed at the end of a long, tiring day and delving into a good book. Whether it’s fantasy, romance, mystery – a well-written story from any genre takes your mind away from the stresses of work, study, or anything else, and transports it into a world where these problems don’t exist. Reading is a quiet activity that allows you to unwind. Research has shown that watching television or staring at a computer screen before going to bed stimulates your mind in such a way that it then finds it difficult to switch off when it’s actually time to go to sleep; comparatively, reading relaxes the mind, allowing for a better quality of sleep!
